Food, Glorious Food
David’s BBQ is a family owned and operated restaurant, based out of the vibrant and eclectic town of Gainesville, Florida. They’re speciality? Good ol’ fashion carolina-style BBQ…and I happened to live right across the street.
I moved to Gainesville to study digital media. I was putting myself through school for the second time and needed some supplemental income. My Uncle and Aunt, both long time Gainesville residents, told me I should apply part-time at David’s BBQ. I figured I could give it a shot. Who doesn’t like BBQ?
I landed a small part-time job. Not only could I walk to work (I like to say I always did), but I benefitted from the constant availability of freshly smoked barbeque and hot cornbread muffins. I came home, sauce stained, sweet tea soaked, and smelling like a barbeque pit. It turned out they needed video content for their social media platform and I needed project material. Match made in heaven. I was curious as to how David’s BBQ originated. I set up an interview with two of the owners to get some insight. If I was curious, I wondered how many other loyal locals were just as interested. I wanted to provide them content they could display on social media platforms to engage their already enthusiastic patrons, and be able to connect with customers with a little authentic history.
David’s BBQ is at the heart of local residents. If you’re craving BBQ with a family-friendly atmosphere, look no further. Carolina-style barbecue emphasizes on whole hogs, mustard and vinegar based sauces infused with cayenne and black peppercorns. It also differentiates itself by using coleslaw as a topping on sandwiches. That’s right. David’s If you’re up for trying new things, ask for slaw on your sandwich, it’s included! If you’re weary, get it on the side. Trust me, it’s worth it. This local staple is made-in-house, fresh, every morning. Customers can enjoy size options ranging from a single cup, to a whole gallon!
Coleslaw is a distinct feature of carolina-style BBQ and is served in between a sandwich or beside a plate. There are a few different ways to make carolina-style slaw and it depends on who you ask and where you are, that will determine your answer. Lexington slaw incorporates ketchup or an alternative tomato base, a hint of heat, fresh black peppercorns, sugar and vinegar, mainly. It is grated finely to match the same fine texture of the meat. Eastern-style coleslaw incorporates similar features, like vinegar, sugar and pepper, but substitutes mayonnaise for the tomato base.
Tip: If you’re in the neighborhood, treat yourself to a round of their delicious, homemade, onion rings to compliment the many plates and sandwiches David’s BBQ offers. I like mine a little extra crispy. ^.^
